“Chiang-ku” is
a peculiar folk practice in Ilan. It represents not only the religious
belief but also the folk culture. It shows our spirit of fraternity to
those pioneers who cultivated Ilan in those days when the plagues
prevailed in the underdeveloped land.
By worshiping
these ancestors, we teach our offspring to keep filial piety in mind.
The competitors must form groups of five members. As the thin bamboo
stems are difficult to climb up, some competitors easily fall down to
the ground. By the tough process of climbing, people can imagine how
difficult it was for the pioneers to cultivate this Lanyang Plain in the
Chin Dynasty.
